5 Ways To Be Happy

Life can be a complex and stressful affair. Stuck in a confirmed reality we all struggle to find a good balance when we enter the daily grind. As a long term traveller, I have often departed the road to enter the 9 – 5 to support my global adventures and know this all too well.

Luckily for me, in general I’m always an optimist – finding silver linings in almost every situation.

So what’s my secret to happiness?

  1. Long Term Travel

Since your reading my blog, you probably already know that travel is the ultimate happy pill. Whether it’s a short vacation or long term travel adventure, there’s something about experiencing another culture that brings out the best in us. In addition to culture, long term travel provides an alternative lifestyle to the conformed reality where stresses of society don’t exist. Even a short vacation allows us a retreat from these stresses, so we can refresh our batteries and find a happy place even at the most stressful of times.

  1. breathe to be happy

    Surf

It’s been proven that the ocean is good for your mental health. So naturally, surfing is a perfect activity and lifestyle to keep you happy and well balanced. There’s nothing like the feeling of the ocean washing your troubles away as you duck dive under waves, so paddle out and be one with nature. While you’re out there, why not meditate and watch the sunrise (or set). Grab a few good waves too, the best way to put yourself in a good move.

Just think about it, have you ever met an unhappy surfer?

  1. Hiking

There’s obviously a common thread here: nature. It’s my instant bad mood fixer, unless I’m hangry of course, then only a good feed can fix it. Getting outside and walking through nature is good for your wellbeing so soak in the fresh air as well as the peace and tranquillity. In addition to mind clearing, hiking through nature is good exercise which means that a simple hike can lead to complete revitalisation. Then you’ve got the longer hikes like the Camino de Santiago, where every day equals more steps to a happy fulfilling life (you’ll understand if you ever decide to walk the way).

  1. Be Mindful of Your Thoughts

And no I’m not trying to be Yoda, but a happy mind does equal a happy life. So controlling your thoughts processes is crucial as when something bad happens we often do a quick loop to “it’s the end of the world.” This leads to stress and unhappiness, so how can we change this? Adding thoughts into our thought loop slows the disaster complex we all have. By adding thoughts and considerations as a response to a negative event, our circle of thought widens which will help find the silver lining aka it’s no longer the end of the world.

  1. Surround Yourself With Good People

It might seem harsh, but a few years ago I decided to distance myself from negative people. People have the capability of lifting you up or ripping you down, so be mindful when choosing your friends. Give your time to people who want to make time for you, there’s no point holding onto one way relationships as they will slowly eat away at your happiness.
